Mary Henderson's German Chocolate Cake


Cake Ingredients
2 cups sugar
1 cup shortenning
4 eggs
1 bar sweet chocolate bar
1/2 cup boiling water
2-1/2 cups cake flour
1 cup butter milk
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla extract
?? salt

Instructions
Cream shortening and sugar together.
Add egg yolks 1 at a time to shortening and sugar mixture.
Add Chocolate bar to boiling water.
Add flour & buttermilk alternately to chocolate.
When chocolate, flour & buttermilk are incorporated, add to egg yolk, shortening & sugar mixture.
Beat eggs whites until fluffy.
Whisk soda in each 1/4 cup of milk.
Fold soda/milk mixture into egg whites.
Fold all ingredients together.
Pour into well oilded 9" cake pakes.

Bake 30 minutes at 350.

Icing Ingredients
1 cup sugar
1 stick butter
1 cup evaporated milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 egg yokes
1 cup shredded coconut
1/2 to 1 cup chopped pecanss

Icing Instructions
Cook slowly together stiring constantly - sugar, milk, butter egg yolks in heavy boiler until thick.
Add coconut, pecans and vanilla.

Spread between layers of cake, on top and sides.
Give bowl to Alan to lick clean.

I've been eating this since 1956 until mom passed away. Someday I will try to make this.
